General Information for Schools

@school in UK is a UK based company providing international student placement and recruitment services for schools and parents, delivered by experienced educationalists from within the UK independent school sector

@school-in-UK aims to place overseas students in the school or institution which is best able to provide for their individual needs.

It is a new company founded in 2005, owned and directed by Stephen Hausey and Neil Pockett, and designed to service boarding schools and other pre-university institutions by providing them with the means to:

  • recruit students from a number of overseas markets,
  • create the appropriate internal environment and infrastructure to be able best to cater for overseas students.

The benefit of the service to schools is that it allows them to be active with confidence in overseas markets whether for the first time or not.

The uniqueness of the service is its comprehensiveness and its delivery by experienced practitioners from within the UK schools’ sector.

The @school-in-UK service for schools has two core components.

1.           Student placement, encompassing

  • representation at selected key overseas education exhibitions,
  • delivery of seminars and presentations in a variety of overseas locations,
  • our on-line internet placement service,
  • the services of our own in-country representatives,
  • academic assessment and interviewing of candidates,
  • offering of places,
  • guardianship arrangements.

2.           School infrastucture, including

  • training for academic and support staff,
  • tried and tested school administrative programmes,
  • advice on teaching provision including EFL,
  • orientation for new student recruits,
  • student orientation programmes,
  • ongoing, ad hoc advice.

@school-in-UK  is a UK-based business involving individuals who have successfully recruited and placed overseas students in independent schools for many years, and who have been intimately involved in providing for them in the school environment.

Stephen Hausey has worked in or for independent schools for over 30 years as a teacher, housemaster, development director and consultant in the UK and overseas, and has direct, practical experience of overseas markets. He has gained this experience in South East Asia as well as in Europe and the Middle East, operating out of the UK and New Zealand.

Neil Pockett for 23 years was Head of St John’s School, Sidmouth and is cureently an Independent Schools Inspector. St John’s led the prep school sector in recruitment overseas and Neil has developed detailed working programmes and routines to cater for overseas students. As a head, Neil actively recruited in overseas markets on many occasions and in many countries.

Godfrey Bishop was formerly Principal of Mussoorie International School in India and Deputy Head of Monkton Combe School near Bath. He has run a language school in France and been a senior consultant with a leading London educational consultancy. He is currently a writer for The Good Schools Guide.

The @school-in-UK directors have been joined by Julian Bewick, former ISCis statitician, housemaster and deputy headmaster, and Geoff Martin, former housemaster and deputy head.

In support is a team of our own in-country representatives, led by Benno Jost-Westendorf, formerly ISCis International’s Germany and Austria representative.  We also have representatives in Hong Kong, Spain, Russia, The Netherlands and France, all of whom are educationalists rather than commercial agents and visit the UK regularly.

@school-in-UK is currently establishing a portfolio of UK schools that will be large enough in number to provide diversity and parental choice, yet small enough to allow us to know the schools well individually.
